Day Program: Yirrkala guided tour - half day

Yirrkala Art Centre

Cost: $105 per person

The half-day tour of Yirrkala is a perfect introduction to Arnhem Land, where you’ll learn the local traditional knowledge from your Yolngu guide, visit the community and nearby areas, and see some of the best Aboriginal art in Australia.

As you stand on the white sands of Shady Beach looking out to the sparkling waters of the Arafura Sea, your guide will paint a picture of the lives of Yolngu people of North-East Arnhem Land, telling stories from Yolngu culture, sharing knowledge of the ancient traditions still practised in the region today and explaining the history of Yirrkala.

An optional bush walk from Shady Beach to the Buku Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre will reveal a smorgasboard of bush tucker at your fingertips, as your guide demonstrates how to find bush tucker and how to prepare and eat it. You’ll also learn valuable traditional knowledge about finding and using bush medicines.

A visit to the Buku Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre, one of the most prominent Indigenous art centres in Northern Australia, is an experience in itself. The art centre and adjoining museum feature artwork by some of the best Aboriginal artists in Australia.  This includes intricate pandanus weavings, traditional bark paintings, magnificent memorial poles, wood sculptures, and limited edition prints.

The half-day tour of Yirrkala combines local, traditional knowledge with real experiences in North-East Arnhem Land.
