The yidaki (didgeridoo) has become a popular instrument all over the world, with people aspiring to learn how to play, to discover the secret talents of the instrument and to understand the cultural origins of the yidaki.

Nobody is more qualified to impart this knowledge than the famous Yidaki Master himself, Djalu Gurruwiwi.

Leader and elder of the Galpu clan, Djalu welcomes visitors to his homeland Gikal in North-East Arnhem Land to share his ancient knowledge and secrets that have earned him the reputation as the world’s foremost yidaki craftsman and player.

You will spend three days at Gikal, a small settlement on a tropical beach overlooking the Arafura Sea, where Djalu will introduce you to the cultural foundations and significance of the yidaki, teach you how to select the right tree to craft a perfect instrument, and guide you in the art of yidaki craftsmanship.

You will make your own yidaki and receive expert tuition in how to bring it to life. As a guest of Djalu and his family, you will experience traditional Yolngu life and interact with Yolngu people who will generously share their ancient knowledge, language, traditions and culture.

This is a rare opportunity to learn from the Yidaki Master who has an almost cult-like following amongst musicians, yidaki collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
